The hatchery is one of the oldest in the UK and produces both Rainbow and Brown trout from our own stock, principally triploids, in the winter and the summer. The Hatchery Stockman is responsible for all aspects of the hatchery area, which includes the rearing programme and all husbandry matters, particularly bio security. You are responsible for the upkeep of the mess room and the D Journal records for the hatchery.
Other duties will involve working on the main farm, feeding, grading, pond cleaning, and the shop area e.g. smoking and filleting. We have a small team at Bibury and the accent is very much on flexibility and assisting with whatever tasks are required. This is particularly relevant during the quieter times between spawning.
Below is a list of duties, which is not exhaustive, other duties as reasonably required:
Upkeep/cleanliness of hatchery, fryary, wells area, food store, mess room and ‘laboratory’.
Ordering of food for hatchery etc.
Ordering and safe storage of medicines/chemicals for hatchery etc.
Welfare of all ova, fry and brood stock.
Stripping and triploiding of all Brown and Rainbow Trout Ova.
Preparation and packing of ova for sale and relevant paperwork.
Records of all medicines used and procedures undertaken.
Records of ova/fry/fingerling numbers and movements.
Must be experienced in all aspects of fish farming, team player but able to work alone and under pressure. Full driving licence required.
