US: Confusion over fish farm faeces accident

14 May, 2007 -

CONFUSION surrounds an accident that occurred at a western Massachusetts farm.
Four fish farm workers reportedly fell into a filtration tank at Australis Aquaculture fish farm on Friday, whilst cleaning it.
According to the Boston Globe (among others) rescuers cut through a filtration tank of dense fish faeces to reach four workers who fell into the sludgy dung.
The workers became trapped for 45 minutes after a bracket holding a plastic filtration pad collapsed as workers stood on it to clean the fibreglass tank at the Australis Aquaculture fish farm, said Capt. David Dion of the Turners Falls Fire Department and the fish farm's manager Josh Goldman.
One of the farmhands fell below what Dion described as a sand-and-faeces mix, while the other three had their heads above the sludge, he said.
Goldman said the workers and the pad, which collects bacteria created by fish urine and faeces, like some household aquarium filters, fell to the bottom of the tank.

However, according to theage.com, Australis said the empty tank had been drained before the maintenance work and there was no fish faeces in the container.

The company said also that no serious injuries were sustained by the four workers.

"The empty tank had been drained prior to the commencement of the repair work and did not contain any manure or other liquid," Australis said.

"The mishap is not expected to have any material affect on production," Australis said.

"All fish in the affected nursery area had already been moved to other systems prior to commencement of the work.

"Additional repairs to the damaged filter resulting from the mishap are estimated to add one week to the maintenance schedule and be accomplished without significant added cost."

Australis owns and operates an indoor aquaculture facilities at Turner Falls that raises Australian barramundi.

The company has more than one million fish at the United States plant.
