New Marine Harvest CEO must focus on environment, says campaign group
03 September, 2007 -
WASHINGTON-BASED Pure Salmon Campaign is calling on Marine Harvest to name a new CEO who will commit to implementing long-term reforms that it says are necessary to make the company a leader in environmental standards.
Commenting on the news that current CEO Atle Eide resigned as of September 1, Andrea Kavanagh, Director of the Pure Salmon Campaign, said: "Marine Harvest has already announced it will remove early stage production from Chile's lakes. Previously, Marine Harvest announced it would source feed without reducing wild ocean stocks.
"Good environmental stewardship makes good business sense. Even though its press release made no mention of environmental stewardship, we hope that this was an oversight and that new management will in fact place a strong emphasis on protecting the marine environment, including respecting the concern of lead investor John Fredriksen to protect wild salmon."
The Pure Salmon Campaign is a global project of the National Environmental Trust. It has partners in the United States, Canada, Europe, Australia and Chile.
