THE Humane Slaughter Association (HSA) has produced a new publication in its Technical Note series, ‘Humane Harvesting of Halibut’.
The new Technical Note draws on the results of several scientific experimental projects on the humane harvesting of sea fish and follows the HSA’s participation in the Defra-funded LINK project on the humane harvesting of halibut. The publication discusses the legislative and welfare requirements for the practical harvesting of farmed halibut and advice is given on welfare during fasting, crowding, transport, stunning and killing.
Both mechanical and electrical stunning are addressed in some detail and it is noted that humane methods may also improve the quality of the end product. HSA Technical Notes are available for free download from www.hsa.org.uk
www.fishfarmer-magazine.com is published by Special Publications. Special Publications also publishes FISHupdate.com, FISHupdate magazine, Fish Farmer, the Fish Industry Yearbook, the Scottish Seafood Processors Federation Diary, the Fish Farmer Handbook and a range of wallplanners.
