SAGB receives £3k funding boost

06 May, 2008 -

Dr Tom Pickerell
THE Shellfish Committee of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations (NFFO) today presented the Shellfish Association of Great Britain (SAGB) with a cheque for £3,000 to assist the ongoing work of the UK Shellfish Industry Development Strategy (SIDS).
SIDS is a Seafish funded, SAGB facilitated three year programme, with the aim of sustainably increasing the production of shellfisheries and to ensure that the decision-makers in government maintain and expand their renewed interest in shellfisheries.
The strategy will examine the restraints to developing the industry, such as water quality and lack of co-ordinated stock assessments in management, and offer practical solutions and will explore development opportunities such as accrediting sustainable shellfisheries and creating markets for new species.
SIDS project manager, Dr Tom Pickerell says: “The NFFO represents a wide range of vessels and sectors. In directly supporting SIDS the NFFO is demonstrating its commitment to the shellfish industry and the smallboat sector.

“The funds received will assist us in both developing web-based films showing the public just how easy it is to select, prepare and enjoy eating our native shellfish and also in a project exploring the development of new markets for novel shellfish species.”
Gary Hodgeson, chairman of the NFFO Shellfish Committee adds: "The shellfisheries are a vital component of this country’s fisheries and it is vital that we work collaboratively for their future. This Development Strategy deserves support and we are committed to it."
