New salmon and sea trout initiative launched 15 August, 2008 -
Environment Agency chairman Lord Chris Smith said rivers and estatuaries had welcomed more than 40,000 new salmon and now he wanted to extend that up to include sea trout as well. One plan is to open up some 18 miles of salmon and trout spawning grounds in one key part of Devon and if that is successful it will be extended to other parts of the country. It could take pressure off parts of Scotland where wild salmon are heavily fished. Lord Smith said: "There has been a huge improvement in water quality and this means we can introduce more salmon and sea trout into areas where they have not so far inhabited. He added: "These special fish are very valuable as they bring social, economic and environmental benefits to local communities. Their sensitivity and need for a good quality environment means we need to work together with our partners to address the complex factors affecting them." Paul Knight, Director of the Salmon and Trout Association, said: "The Salmon and Trout Association very much welcomes the Environment Agency's new strategy, especially the inclusion of sea trout.
