SARNISSA project meets in Cameroon

06 April, 2009 - The EC funded Sustainable Aquaculture Research Networks for Sub Saharan Africa (SARNISSA) project held a series of meetings and workshops in Yaounde, Cameroon between February 24-28th in order to develop progress made in its first year.
A 2 day West and Central African stakeholders workshop was held including researchers, commercial fish farmers, NGO’s, government and academic sectors from Cameroon, Cote D’Ivoire, Benin, Democratic Republic of Congo, Kenya and Malawi. The workshop shared in country presentations, both in English and French, focussing on aquaculture research and development needs towards benefiting end users in each country, then developing these into training in concept note/proposal writing towards successful funding applications.
Also a one day E conferencing training workshop was held with the objective of building capacity in regional stakeholders to successfully organise and carry out E conferences, (thus reducing costs and travel) and allowing a range of key stakeholders to discuss and develop key research issues and collaborations. SARNISSA also had its first Annual Progress and Planning Meeting where its partners reviewed the years progress and modified its workplan for the following two years.
SARNISSA is sharing and increasing access to information, contacts, and relevant publications related to African aquaculture to a wide range of stakeholders involved in African aquaculture, whilst also encouraging research and development collaborations aimed at benefiting end users. SARNISSA also runs two African aquaculture email discussion fora (English and French versions) which now have over 900 members from 42 countries across Africa and 43 countries internationally. The www.sarnissa.org website is regularly updated with new publications, African aquaculture news, research, funding and employment opportunities, videos, conferences and meetings, African fish farms and research institutions, and now has over 80 hits per day.
In terms of other project outputs SARNISSA is presently producing a series of up to date analytical reviews relating to aquaculture policy, research and development in 10 selected sub Saharan countries, whilst also commissioning a series of user friendly, illustrative, 10 page case studies on different aquaculture related topics in sub Saharan Africa. Finally following a 1 month aquaculture study tour by SARNISSA’s three African partners to Thailand, Bangladesh and Nepal in November 2008 an illustrated report on the experiences, findings and contacts from each of the three partners is being published. Each of these will be completed and available to all SARNISSA stakeholders by May 2009.
Anyone wishing to join and benefit from the SARNISSA network please contact Will Leschen wl2@stir.ac.uk or for French speakers Lionel Dabbadie lionel.dabbadie@cirad.fr . SARNISSA is an EC funded FP7 project including the partners: IRAD Cameroon, Bunda College Malawi, Moi University Kenya, WorldFish Center, CIRAD France, CABI, AIT Bangkok, ETC Netherlands and University of Stirling UK.
