The NAFC Marine Centre in Shetland is committed to the sustainable development of local and national maritime industries through the provision of research, development, education and training. ‘Aquaculture Development’ is the largest of four active sections within the Department of Marine Science and Technology, and supports local and national industry through stakeholder interaction, expert advice, research and education.  The Marine Centre is currently seeking a dynamic individual for the position of Aquaculture Research Scientist within this section.  The appointment will be on a contract basis for an initial fixed term period of two years.

The successful candidate will help develop and deliver a variety of applied aquaculture research projects, contribute to a variety of aquaculture related training and education courses and assist in the smooth operation of the Centre’s aquaculture infrastructure. The Centre has extensive high quality facilities which include a marine finfish/shellfish hatchery, a shellfish on-growing site, two sea cage trials units, research vessels and well equipped laboratories. The post holder will be encouraged to develop a research portfolio that is aligned with the strategy of the Aquaculture Development Section and wider Marine Centre.

The ideal candidate will have: a relevant postgraduate degree (Ph.D. desirable); a scientific publication record; evidence of (or potential) ability to attract external funding; and the ability to engage stakeholders from a broad background.  The skills required of the candidate will include experimental design ability, data analysis, the interpretation and reporting of results, effective verbal and written communication, technical and/or analytical know-how and knowledge of commercial aquaculture operations.  It is essential that the ability to operate as part of a team has been evidenced previously.

The ability to prepare and submit research and development proposals in consultation with peers at the Centre, other academic research institutes and the aquaculture industry will be favoured as will experience in communicating scientific results to industry.  As such the successful candidate will be fluent in the English language, will have excellent verbal and communication skills and be able to take up work in the United Kingdom prior to the post start date.  A full driving licence valid in the UK is essential. Considering the nature of the position, flexible working conditions may be required from time to time.
