A NEW series of online modules to educate young people about the aquaculture industry has been launched by animal health and nutrition company Alltech and the Irish agri-food educational body, Agri Aware.
The modules, available on Kidzone, demonstrate that aquaculture is a positive, dynamic and innovative industry, detailing how farmers all over the world have a common goal of providing safe, traceable aquaculture products for a growing world population while sustaining the natural environment.
This entertaining, yet comprehensive teaching tool, soon to be offered in Spanish and Portuguese, encourages children to ‘Dig In!’ and learn about the concept of aquaculture, the different aqua species, the production of algae and the benefits the organism provides.
The ‘Dig In’ programme has already been successfully implemented in schools throughout Ireland, projecting a promising future for Kidzone on a global scale.
According to Alltech President Dr Pearse Lyons: “Aquaculture is one of the fastest growing food sources in the last 20 years, and it is important that children learn about the potential role of aquatic proteins as the major source to feed a growing population.
“In an age of increased demand for food and biofuel production, and existing environmental concerns, Kidzone teaches our children about where their food comes from, eating healthy, how to act sustainably and about the positive impact that agriculture has on our world. This is an extraordinary educational opportunity for our young students.”
Agri Aware Chairman Mairead Lavery said: “Positively reinforcing the importance of agriculture and food production amongst young people is vital to the sustained growth of the industry. Dig In! gives teachers the resources to engage and educate children of all ages about the agri-food sector.”
