UK:Europe’s largest barramundi farm nears completion in New Forest

SEVERAL million pounds of investment, coupled with a strategy of employing leading specialists, has seen a former pizza factory transformed into one of the world’s leading aquaculture centres in just 12 months.
From early spring, barramundi, claimed to be one of the world’s finest fish to eat, will be available to UK consumers fresh from the farm to the plate within 24 hours. This warm-water fish is usually found in Australasia but New Forest,England, barramundi will soon be available from a "start-of-the-art" indoor fish farm built by Aquabella Group plc.
Led by Les Green, Aquabella has constructed the farm on a 3.5 acre site near Lymington in the New Forest. The site houses 48 indoor tanks with an array of water treatment facilities; over 3 million litres of water; pristine growing conditions; no additives or hormones given to the fish and a constant room and water temperature of around 28°C.
New Forest Barramundi claims to be one of Europe’s largest indoor fish farms and initially will produce more than 400 tonnes of Barramundi every year but there is scope to more than double that level of production over time.
The company is confident that the first commercial harvests will commence by the end of March 2006.
Chief Executive Les Mr Green believes Barramundi will be popular with UK consumers because of its delicate taste and versatility: “This is one of the world’s greatest eating fish – comparable to sea bass or sole. It’s easy to cook and is usually steamed, fried or grilled. Not only is it a great tasting fish but it is very healthy too – being low in fat and high in essential Omega-3 oils.”
Although initial stocks of fingerlings have come from Australasia there are plans to build a hatchery, due for completion at the end of 2006. This will mean future supplies of fish will be uniquely hatched and harvested in the New Forest.
