08 June, 2006 - THE Danish aquaculture sector has won backing among politicians to expand aquaculture in order to meet growing international demand according to worldfish report June. The fish-farming body Dansk Akvakultur reportedly said that Denmark’s present output of 40 000 tonnes should be expanded to over 100 000t, boosting turnover to Dkr4 billion. DA want expansion in all areas from freshwater farms and sea-based production, including inland farms with seawater recirculation. Uncertainty about seawater fish farming has limited production areas, but the fisheries minister Hans Chr. Schmidt has identified further sites. Schmidt expects that, with recent investments of Dkr100m in better water filtration, there will in the future be fewer but larger freshwater units. In addition, the Danish Food ministry has given Dkr2m to a new research project to investigate the commercial production of softshelled/shell-less beach crabs; these are crabs that have just shed their shells, and therefore can be eaten whole. There is reportedly a big potential market for the crabs in the US and Asia. www.fishfarmer-magazine.com is published by Special Publications.
