Ireland: Barramundi-farming company appoints new board members

29 June, 2006 - AQUA Fresh Fish Ltd based in Kilkerley, on the outskirts of Dundalk in Ireland, has been successful in attracting two international experts to join their Board.
Stephen Chetcuti from Australia, an experienced business developer with extensive aquaculture and venture capital experience, will join the Board as Commercial Director and Dr Bent Urup from Denmark will join the Board as Technical Director. Bent has 20 years hands-on experience in aquaculture, including system design and also Farm Management, having managed the biggest halibut farm in Europe. Stephen and DrUrup provide Aqua Fresh Fish with a "depth of knowledge and experience rarely seen".
Aqua Fresh Fish Ltd. was founded in 2004 to farm Australian Barramundi in a land-based Recirculation System. Recirculation systems are globally recognised as the most environmentally friendly method of culturing fish. Aqua Fresh Fish have been working closely with the locally based Aquaculture Initiative and BIM for the past two years. They are currently in the final phase of securing grant aid from the NDP fund and an Aquaculture Licence from the CZMD (Costal Zone Management Division) who operate under the control of the Marine department. The company are very confident that approval for grant aid and the Aquaculture Licence will be forthcoming in the very near future.
The project has taken two years to get to the construction stage. Construction is due to commence as soon as the NDP grant aid has been approved and the Aquaculture Licence is in place.
The first phase of the facility, which will cost in the region of €3m, will be a Commercial Trial to prove that a tropical table fish can be cultured in Ireland, in commercial quantities, on a year round basis. Planning is also in place for a second phase which would double the production of the trial, giving a full commercial scale, land-based farm which would be one of the biggest barramundi farms in Europe.
It is expected that the facility will export over €1 million worth of product per annum for the first phase, with the potential to double this with the planned expansion. It is hoped that the company will employ 9 people in the first phase with further jobs to come with the second phase.
The company has been supported by the North East Enterprise Platform Programme in the Regional Development Centre in DKIT since September 2005. This year long programme of support for graduate entrepreneurs is currently recruiting for the next programme which will start in September 2006.
